10 Recent Movie Shots You Didn't Know Were Accomplished With CGI
7. Shopping Bags - Shazam!
Sometimes filmmakers are forced to use CGI to correct mistakes they didn't notice while shooting, and that's precisely what happened during production of Shazam!
During the sequence where Shazam (Zachary Levi) runs through a mall, you probably didn't pay much notice to the collection of shoppers on the right-hand side of the screen, because they just seemed like regular folk, right?
Except, as hilariously explained by director David F. Sandberg himself, he was so fixated on the effects for Shazam attempting to fly that he didn't notice until late in post-production that the shoppers were actually visible crew members.
And so, in order to conceal the crew's equipment, Sandberg had VFX artists add some shopping bags to their hands to conceal their true reason for being in the shot.
Clearly, Sandberg cutting his teeth on lower-budget productions served him well here, coming up with a clever, creative solution to a problem at a relatively minimal cost. And best of all, 99.999% of the audience was absolutely none the wiser.
