10 Recent Movie Shots You Didn't Know Were Accomplished With CGI
8. Maz Kanata - Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker
Though it's well-known that Maz Kanata (Lupita Nyong'o) was a fully CGI creation in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and its sequel The Last Jedi, J.J. Abrams and his crew promised that the character would be realised practically in the recent threequel The Rise of Skywalker.
The results in the final film are certainly impressive, and fans generally seemed to respond positively to Maz's more believably tactile puppet appearance in the movie.
Except, it's a little dishonest to call Maz an entirely practical character in The Rise of Skywalker, given that ILM's recent VFX sizzle reel revealed that the on-set puppet had its mouth movements augmented by an actor in a mo-cap suit, whose work was transplanted on top of the live-action puppet.
It's still an extremely impressive achievement all the same, given that the physical presence of Maz's head and eyes made her seem so real.
However, the more complex musculature of her mouth moving was understandably a little too involved for the practical limitations of puppetry.
