Last year's new live-action-animation hybrid take on Tom and Jerry was rightly pilloried by critics for its utterly witless script, and worst of all the fact that its title characters basically took a backseat to the overabundance of humans flooding the screen.

Poor Chloƫ Grace Moretz, who certainly tries to elevate the material, but is trapped in a generic, low-effort family "comedy" that desperately attempts to coast on its nostalgia.

But again confirming general audiences' preference for "easy viewing" that doesn't tax the brain, Tom and Jerry currently sits at 82% audience approval and nabbed an extremely impressive "A-" CinemaScore.

It also can't be ignored that Tom and Jerry released last February and for many families it was likely their first trip back to the cinema since the start of the pandemic.

And so, the sheer thrill of watching something, anything on the big screen surely contributed to average viewers having a better time with it than more cynical critics.

That said, its audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes hasn't exactly fallen off a cliff since it left cinemas, so we can infer that many parents still consider it to be an acceptable babysitting tool for their kids. Sometimes that's enough.
