4. Captain Marvel

The Last Jedi
Marvel Studios

A mere twenty films into their cinematic run, Marvel played catch-up with DC’s Wonder Woman and released its first female-led superhero movie in the form of Captain Marvel. Bolstered as the most powerful hero in the MCU, Captain Marvel had big shoes to fill, especially since audience’s last superhero outing had left them desperate for more with the devastating cliff-hanger of Infinity War looming over this movie.

While Captain Marvel was arguably nothing to write home about, it began to evoke a campaign of hate towards its lead actor Brie Larson, and its apparent social justice tendencies that were misconceived by a handful of particularly hateful viewers.

Nonetheless, along with a predictable plot, so-so action and THE worst way to lose an eye ever, Captain Marvel became one of the proverbial punching back of MCU criticism and already feels like a film that came out years ago, despite only releasing this time last year.
