10 Recent Movies NOBODY Expected To Be This Good
5. Godzilla Vs. Kong
Going by its production history, Godzilla vs. Kong had all the makings of a mega-budget dud both critically and commercially.
The $200 million blockbuster completed principal photography shortly before the release of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which underwhelmed with critics and at the box office, prompting rumours that Godzilla vs. Kong was set to undergo heavy reshoots to iron out its issues.
Amid numerous delays and the onset of the pandemic, it was reported that the film was being shopped around to streaming services, further suggesting that it was another doomed tentpole project that the studio was desperate to dump and recoup as much money as possible.
But in the end, Godzilla vs. Kong was released in cinemas and on HBO Max the same day, and scored an impressive 75% approval rating with critics, placing it basically on-par with both the 2014 Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island.
Versus movies are tough to pull off at the best of times, and the writing really seemed to be on the wall for Godzilla vs. Kong to be an abject mess.
It's certainly not a great movie, but it absolutely delivered the jumbo-sized thrills implied by its title, and per its unexpected box office success in the middle of the pandemic may have saved the MonsterVerse from the premature death it seemed destined for.
