5. The Apprentice - The Lack Of Introspection
Even if releasing a film about the early years of Donald Trump when the man was about to stand for election (which he ultimately won) was an odd move, it's hard to regret this movie's existence. The Apprentice is a haunting, darkly comedic and characterful examination of one of the most loathed men alive today, and it boasts stunning performances from Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, and Maria Bakalova as Trump, Attorney Roy Cohn, and Ivana Trump respectively.
Unfortunately, many seemed resistant to the film, and it ended up being one of the most underappreciated pictures of 2024, although reviewers did raise one valid complaint: there's not much in the way of psychological introspection when it comes to its portrayal of Trump.
In some ways, that seems appropriate given that Donald Trump himself is such a baffling, mind-boggling enigma of a man, but placing more emphasis on the man's psychology and why he's turned out the way he has definitely wouldn't have hurt the movie. Even if Stan's wonderful performance provides plenty of insight itself, there was room for the screenplay to do a little more deep-diving of its own.
