10 Recent Movies That Avoided Obvious Mistakes
5. Bringing Helen Hunt Back - Twisters
Back when a follow-up to 1996's smash hit disaster movie Twister was first announced, many questioned whether Universal would do the obvious thing and make it a card-carrying legacy sequel that teams young new characters with the original surviving lead.
Though Bill Paxton sadly passed away in 2017, it was simply assumed that his original co-star Helen Hunt would have a supporting role in Twisters, most likely as the mother of new storm-chasing female lead Kate (Daisy Edgar-Jones).
It just seemed like the most lazy, obvious choice a studio would make to ensure they could fully exploit all the nostalgia for the '96 film. But while Twisters isn't a terribly original quasi-sequel, it does harbour the restraint to focus itself wholly around a new band of heroes who have no links to Paxton or Hunt's existing characters whatsoever.
While the role of Kate's mother Cathy (Maura Tierney) could've conceivably been written for Hunt originally, the movie ultimately didn't bend over backwards to find a way to pull Hunt's Jo Harding into the story, and in this ultra-conservative, cynical era of Hollywood, that's something to respect.
