Because Tomm Moore's films focus on Irish myths, it would be easy for his projects to alienate people unfamiliar with Celtic folklore. But his work on The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea managed to resonate with audiences worldwide, and blew everyone away with their gorgeous animation.
Although these animated features failed to make a profit, they were both Oscar-nominated for Best Animated Feature, boosting Moore's reputation. Because the Northern Irish filmmaker had showcased his talents, you'd think people would be excited to see the third chapter in his Irish Folktale Trilogy, Wolfwalkers.
But Moore’s latest work was also his biggest bomb, earning one-tenth of its budget. Even though the film was acquired by Apple+ from the get-go, it did receive a cinematic release weeks before it began streaming.
When the film garnered Moore yet another Oscar nomination, the studio rereleased Wolfwalkers in theatres, certain it would bring in some cash this time around.
Unfortunately, Tomm Moore's magnum opus pulled a Morbius by bombing twice, making Wolfwalkers his least successful movie.
