10 Recent Movies That Grossly Overestimated What Their CGI Could Do

Last year's big-screen Baywatch reboot also reiterated just how hard it is to get CGI fire right, especially when you leave it to the intern of the VFX house to crank out on a Friday afternoon.

Baywatch's $69 million budget was certainly on the higher-end for action-comedy movies, and one can only assume too much of that bank went to star Dwayne Johnson, leaving little for the sequence where Johnson and his lifeguard pals rescue the passengers of a flaming boat.

The fire here looks only marginally better than the jagged, orange sprites you'd see in a late-period PS2 game, never once selling the illusion that anyone is in danger, or that Johnson and co. are actually standing mere inches away from skin-singeing flames.

The sequence goes on for several excruciating minutes and is just painful to look at. Clearly the scene should've been re-conceived when the movie's budget was being put together, because for a major studio movie to look this rough is actually embarrassing.
