10 Recent Movies That Grossly Overestimated What Their CGI Could Do

7. Wonder Woman

For its first two acts, Wonder Woman is a terrifically entertaining superhero origin story, making judicious use of visual effects to cement Diana's (Gal Gadot) overwhelming power and, most importantly, her inspiring heroism.

Then the movie forgets all of that, going full DCEU as Diana takes on Ares (David Thewlis) in a blurry, goofy-looking climax that resembles an especially unimaginative video game boss fight.

There are numerous problems here: fire is one of the most difficult-to-render digital elements and there's a ton of it here, while the floaty physics look intensely silly, and the abundance of CGI objects thrown around are distractingly phoney.

This one's especially frustrating as previous DCEU films were criticised for their CGI-laced climaxes, and there was fair hope that, away from the reach of Zack Snyder, Wonder Woman might be different.

There's also no real reason why the fight couldn't have been achieved by putting Thewlis in an actual suit of armour and adding a few digital elements, rather than just comically pasting his face inside of a digital husk.

It's a disappointingly conventional, ugly finale to a movie that was otherwise pleasantly surprising in almost every aspect.
