10 Recent Movies That Made INSANE Choices
3. It's Secretly A Musical - Sinners
Ryan Coogler's Sinners is certainly one of the boldest and most impressive films of the year so far, but not merely content to deliver a technically audacious historical vampire film, Coogler went one further and secretly made the film a quasi-musical.
Music is an extremely important part of the movie, given that Sinners is primarily set in and around a juke joint, and Coogler consequently relishes every opportunity to stop the action and focus on the songs.
Several of Sinners' most memorable scenes are elaborately choreographed musical performances, from a roof-raising turn by guitarist Sammie (Miles Caton) to an Irish jig from villainous vampire Remmick (Jack O'Connell).
Sure, characters aren't spontaneously breaking out into song like a conventional musical, but given that the vampire aspect of the plot doesn't fully kick in until close to the third act, it's fair to say that Sinners is as much a musical as it is a vampire film.
It was a huge risk on Coogler's part, to inject such prolonged musical set-pieces into an already-risky big-budget genre film, but damn if he didn't just knock it out of the park.
