10 Recent Movies That Totally Took You By Surprise
5. F1
In a summer expected to be dominated by the likes of Jurassic World: Rebirth, Superman, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Joseph Kosinski's F1 may be the dark horse in this particular race and prove to be the best of the bunch.
Racing films are not uncommon in this day and age. However, they can prove to be risky due to the film having to cater to a specific audience as opposed to the general majority. And with a meaty budget of a reported $200-$300 million, F1 needed to expand its horizons and appeal to the masses and break the norm as such.
And with that in mind, Kosinski's F1 is nothing short of spectacular.
It starts out as a story of rivalry and resentment, but ultimately ends in redemption and respect. The grizzled, hardened veteran versus the arrogant, cocky up-and-comer that we've seen in times forgone on the silver screen, and that's why F1 works so well; it's a throwback to a time where movies like this ruled the roost.
Starring the real-life Benjamin Button, Brad Pitt, as well as Damson Idris, Kerry Condon, and Javier Bardem, F1 features roaring engines, ferocious driving sequences, stunning locations, and high stakes. The film also takes advantage of the real-life tracks, cars, and drivers it has access to and pays homage to the sport it is a clear love letter for.
Kosinski could be accused of just repeating the same formula that made Top Gun: Maverick so great. But, damn, does it work a treat.
