6. Missing Link
Poor Laika. Another victim to Annapurna's dodgy promotion, this film is one of the biggest financial flops of the year.
Despite its good reviews, stacked voice cast and beautiful animation that has proved a success before for Laika, Missing Link made just under $25 million on a whopping $100 million production budget.
Missing Link went completely missed by a majority of the population, as its measly promotion made it a complete non-entity to the general cinema going public. The film is skewed much younger in its subject matter compared to other Laika productions that benefit from a less than conventional animation technique.
Its lack of promotion is the major reason for its under-performance, as its release window was fairly void of other competing family or animated films. If pushed correctly with a more conservative budget, perhaps the film could have done better. But its astronomical budget that it should have been incredibly apparent it would not make back based on previous Laika box office receipts meant that a promotion budget was probably nonexistent. The film was sent out to theatres in April and quietly disappeared as quickly as it arrived.
