10 Recent Movies That Weren't What Anyone Expected
7. Friendship
A cursory glance at A24's new film Friendship surely led many to assume that it'd be a quirky bromantic indie comedy, given that it stars Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd of all people.
But Friendship isn't that movie at all - it's a far stranger, more surreal black comedy about masculinity that retains the look and feel of your average A24 thriller or horror movie.
Tim Robinson is basically dropped into the middle of a more familiar drama movie like a live grenade, where his toe-curling awkwardness makes even basic interactions intensely unsettling for the audience to sit through.
For anyone lured in by the more lighthearted marketing and the promise of an I Love You, Man-esque jaunt, this was something decidedly weirder, darker, and more interesting - albeit certainly not for everyone.
The lesson here? Tim Robinson is probably physically incapable of starring in a conventional studio comedy at this point.
