The fifth Pirates movie, Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Men Tell No Tales, was far from perfect. In fact, it's the weakest entry in the swashbuckling franchise.

However, the blockbuster did a serviceable job at wrapping up loose ends. Barbossa reunited with his daughter before dying, Will Turner freed himself from the Dutchman curse, and Jack Sparrow got a monkey. Since everything was tied up in a neat little bow, this would've been a perfect time to put the series to bed.

But then we got a tacked-on stinger that said "Screw that". In this scene, Will Turner is sleeping with his wife when he has a vision of Davy Jones, insinuating the cephalodic captain will return in a future instalment.

But due to the underperformance of POTC: DMTNT (that's a weird abbreviation), the franchise's future is uncertain. Despite the fact Jerry Bruckheimer stated that a draft for the sixth film was being written back in 2020, there's been no announcement of the script since.

At this moment, no one has officially signed onto the proposed follow-up nor has it recieved a release date.
