10 Recent Underrated Movies That Deserve A Second Chance
6. Assassination Nation
Assassination Nation has some fairly recognisable names attached to it, but none of them really bring star power. Bill Skarsgard, Joel McHale, Anika Noni Rose, Suki Waterhouse and even Bella Thorne have all enjoyed success previously, but none of them are the types of name you go and see a movie for. So it proved with Assassination Nation, with the action comedy grossing just shy of $3 million from a $7 million budget.
That feels like far too low a return for a movie as slick and stylish as Assassination Nation though. If anything, it's almost too stylish: it's a can of Monster energy drink tossed in a microwave. It's not often that 'vomit' can be used as a positive verb, but Assassination Nation truly feels you're watching it vomit up set pieces, blood and social comedy in a neon-coloured froth.
It's a more self aware Sin City, it's Spring Breakers on a sugar high.
It's exploitative and celebratory in equal measure, and in all honesty, there are far more reasons not to watch than to watch it. However, if you can navigate through them though, you'll find a very, very rough diamond.
