10 Recently Announced Movies That Will Probably Never Happen
1. Rendezvous With Rama
There have been various attempts to adapt Arthur C. Clarke's legendary 1973 sci-fi novel Rendezvous with Rama to the big screen over the last 20-plus years.
Morgan Freeman, a huge fan of the book, has been tirelessly committed to adapting it since the early 2000s, yet even with David Fincher attached to direct at one point, it never came to fruition, largely due to funding issues and difficulties in completing the script.
But after almost a decade of near-total radio silence, last December it was announced that the adaptation was back in development, with Alcon Entertainment set to produce the project with the great Denis Villeneuve (Blade Runner 2049, Dune) signed to direct.
As much as Villeneuve is an incredibly inspired choice to helm such an ambitious slice of sci-fi, and Alcon did the unthinkable of getting a mega-budget Blade Runner sequel made, it won't seem like a real possibility until we actually see a trailer for it.
Even with Alcon's enthusiasm for ambitious, expensive sci-fi, Rendezvous with Rama is a considerably more niche project than Blade Runner, and in the current box office landscape, it isn't easy to see how it could be profitable while doing justice to the source material.
It'd be great to be wrong, but given the massive difficulty Freeman has had in getting the film made, and Villeneuve being a hugely in-demand filmmaker, this feels like one of those announced projects that just keeps stalling until it all-but evaporates.
