10 Remakes Of Classic '80s Movies That Bombed Terribly
7. The Stepfather
The Original: Terry O’Quinn gives a career-making performance as Jerry Blake, who marries widows and divorcees in the hope of finding the perfect family, then erupts into violence when they fail to live up to his expectations. Released at the same time as the considerably trashier Fatal Attraction, The Stepfather wasn’t as big a hit but it’s a far superior thriller.
The Remake: Rebooted for the Twilight set, this PG-13 revamp dumbs down the original story and presents it through the eyes of a teenaged hero, leading to a movie that plays more like an episode of Scooby Doo (that's a running theme here). The cops are incompetent, the parents are either ineffective or thoroughly evil and the only people who can save the day are the kids.
The 1987 original spawned 2 sequels, but after the remake made only $31 million worldwide, Sony wisely decided to shelve its plans for a follow-up.
