5. Pete Docter's Fear That Pixar Were Going To Fire Him Led To The Film's Breakthrough Moment - Inside Out

Pixar would be outright crazy to fire the man who directed animated classics such as Monsters Inc. and Up, but during the early stages of Inside Out's development, Pete Docter - Oscar-winning filmmaker - became convinced that the studio were going to sack him. Despite the fact that Inside Out has been hailed as one of Pixar's best films ever (some people have actually called it their greatest work to date, and you can make a case for it), the development of Inside Out wasn't a smooth process. Docter became conflicted and anxious about where the story was headed, and couldn't figure out how to bring it all together. This frustration led to a period of sadness, and he worried about being fired. Docter became so down on himself that he started to consider his other successes at Pixar to be "flukes." And then, suddenly, whilst taking a sad Sunday stroll, something struck him: the character of Joy needed to be teamed with the character of Sadness in order for the story to click. That's right: Docter's own bout of sadness literally inspired Inside Out's core idea - that sadness is just as important and beneficial an emotion as happiness. From there, everything began to fall into place. Get ready for your next Oscar, Docter.
