10 Remarkable Movie Performances By The Last Actor You'd Expect

1. Heath Ledger In The Dark Knight

Oh how we laughed, oh how we all laughed at the idea of Heath Ledger, the guy from 10 Things I Hate About You playing the Joker. And yet, we were all wrong.

On the face of it though, it did seem like one of the most bizarre casting choices ever announced. Ledger was primarily a romantic-comedy actor. His square jaw and dreamy eyes (speaking completely objectively of course) in no way jelled with the Clown Prince of Crime, especially one that would fit in to the dark and gritty world of The Dark Knight.

However, there's probably never been a group of people happier to be proved wrong than Batman fans who saw The Dark Knight. Ledger's performance was spectacular and the thing on which everything else (even Batman himself). It was a captivating performance, filled with quirks and ticks that made the character come alive and immortal lines like "why so serious?" and "do you want to know how I got these scars" that will probably still be quoted years from now.

Tragically, it was one of Heath Ledger's final performances, but it was a heck of a high to go out on and a reminder to everyone not to judge a book by its cover.

Well except until Jared Leto was announced as the next Joker. To be fair though, we were absolutely right about that one being bad.
