10 RIDICULOUS Horror Movies That Are TERRIFYING
5. The Shallows
Shark movies are inherently pretty daft at the best of times, but 2016's The Shallows rocks a uniquely laboured, convoluted setup in which a young woman (Blake Lively) ends up stranded on a rock 200 yards from shore while being stalked by a great white shark.
This is one of those gimmicky "everything that can go wrong, will go wrong" horror-thrillers that's a ton of fun to watch even though it requires extraordinary suspension of disbelief.
If you buy into the contrived circumstances that leave Lively's protagonist imperiled, and the increasingly dire wrinkles that further complicate her survival, The Shallows does capture the visceral terror of being pursued by a natural predator in a way few other post-Jaws shark films ever have.
Credit to Lively for not only her intensely physical performance but also her ability to carry the film almost solo, persuading most naysayers to buy fully into her protagonist's predicament despite our greater instincts telling us otherwise.
