10 Ridiculous Movie Controversies That Went Nowhere

It was announced back in September 2021 that Chris Pratt would be voicing Mario in Illumination's animated Super Mario Bros. Movie, news which immediately caused a severe backlash online.

For many who felt over-exposed by Pratt's presence on their screens in recent years, he was about the safest, least imaginative choice possible for the part, with the more boisterous quarters of the Internet insisting he would therefore ruin the movie.

There were even some incredibly silly petitions insisting that Pratt be replaced with Mario's video game voice actor Charles Martinet, ignoring the fact that the "Mario voice" from the games would be downright insufferable in a 90-minute movie.

Even as some melodramatic fans considered that Pratt's casting could tank the film's box office, of course The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a massive commercial success and, at the time of press, is closing in on $1 billion worldwide.

More to the point, Pratt was totally fine in the movie - not a remotely creative choice for Mario, sure, but he lent the character an appropriate everyman quality and didn't constantly remind the audience he was Star-Lord. Basically, all the whining was ultimately for nothing.
