To make sure the audience gets the idea, Scorsese added a rat walking across a patio-railing with the Boston courthouse in the background.

Many found the insertion of the vermin just to on-the-nose for their taste. Is the scene on par with how incredible the rest of the film is? No. Does it completely ruin the classic? Absolutely not. To think that one five second shot can tarnish a Best Picture winner to the point of raising cash for its removal is ludicrous, and a frivolous waste of money.
