10 Ridiculous Movie Plots That Sound Like Fan Fiction (But Are Real)
7. The Crimes Of Grindelwald
Fans of Harry Potter started to miss the film series when the final movie came and went. The magic was still hanging in the air, and people craved more. Warner Bros. knew this, and they saw dollar signs. Let’s face it: the first Fantastic Beasts film was an honest expansion in the wizarding world, but The Crimes of Grindelwald is pure fan service.
None of the characters appear to grow organically. Every direction the plot moves in is in service to Harry Potter fans. Imagine giving the reins of J.K. Rowling's world over to an angsty teen. That's the way this film plays out. Every character is going through sad stuff and Newt begins to feel like a side character in his own movie franchise. On top of that, the storyline's allusion to World War Two is painfully clear from the get go, but the plot hits the audience over the head with that imagery again and again. It's the kind of insecurity in a narrative that's usually only reserved for fan fiction.
The introduction of Fawkes is done for fans of the books. The Sorcerer’s Stone (or Philosopher’s Stone) reveal is done for fans of the books. The Naagini origin story is done for fans of the books. All of this collides on itself and makes the whole movie feel like a fan fiction version where the entire world needs to connect to the Harry Potter series. Nothing was left to be independent and unique.
