Not as clumsy or random as a blaster, the lightsaber is arguably the most iconic weapon in the history of movies. Even as the quality of the movies wavered throughout the prequel trilogy, the lightsaber duels constantly provided both drama and excitement.. Mostly because they didn't suffer from George Lucas' awful dialogue. Much like both the Jedi and Sith that wield them, the saga's signature weapon comes in many shapes, sizes and colors. There are the standard versions wielded by the majority of characters across both trilogies, but the weapon has also been treated to some stylistic flourishes over the years. Christopher Lee's Count Dooku was given a lightsaber with a curved hilt, General Grievous was given no less than four, and one of the best moments in The Phantom Menace was when the criminally underused Darth Maul debuted the dual-wielding version. Of course, no discussion of customized lightsabers would be complete without mentioning Samuel L Jackson, who asked for and received a purple version that the actor admitted has 'Bad Motherf**ker' engraved on the hilt. For five decades now, countless children (and many adults) have staged mock lightsaber battles amongst themselves across the globe, making their own sound effects and no doubt accidentally gouging a few eyes in the process. With JJ Abrams set to bring the Star Wars saga back to the big screen, and introducing a new generation of cinema-goers to the universe in the process, the lightsaber will no doubt continue to reign supreme as the most awesome weapon in movies.
