10 Ridiculously Expensive Movies That Blew Their Budget

6. Superman Returns

Superman ReturnsBudget: $204 million What We Got: A movie in which one of comic book lore's pre-eminent superheroes plays a deadbeat father and sad sack, while everything truly awesome about the guy - that he can fly and kick ass - is basically pushed to the periphery. There are numerous ways Singer managed to blow such a colossal budget while making this the least action-packed and most boring Superman movie ever made; the four months spent growing a cornfield in Australia to make the location resemble Smallville proved large fruitless as just a few minutes of the film ended up being set there. More infamous than that is a ridiculously expensive $10 million sequence which featured Superman in space, examining the exploded remnants of his home planet, Krypton, which the director then scrapped from the final cut. Clearly, Singer devoted resources to ideas that he hadn't really thought through, but thankfully, with just $20 million more, Zack Snyder finally gave us the action-packed Superman movie we all wanted with Man of Steel.
