10 Romantic Film Relationships That Definitely Wouldn't Last
9. Preston And Amanda - Can't Hardly Wait
There's something a little bit weird about the relationship between Preston and Amanda in Can't Hardly Wait. The entire film is built around them getting together, but not because we the audience have any indication that they will be a good couple, but rather because Preston seems like a nice guy and we'd like to see him get what he wants. That's pretty much it. At no point in the film do we see anything that leads us to believe that Amanda has any feelings about him whatsoever (or even knows who he is) until the last five minutes of the film, when she finds his letter and decides that she'd like to be with him. Even though up until that point she seemed pretty confident in her decision to be single for a while, having defined herself in the past by her relationships, and wanting to head off to college without any romantic entanglements. Which is just so smart it honestly has no place in a romantic comedy. And Preston? Well... he has good intentions, but he's just straight up creepy. Newsflash, guy: eating the same brand of Pop-Tarts does not mean that you and some random girl you don't even know are cosmically bound or something. But it's a romantic comedy, so there has to be a "happy ending". So they hook up before Preston heads away to a writing workshop at his college. And honestly? Their relationship probably didn't last much longer than the few hours they spent feverishly making out at the train station.
