6. Pig (97%)
When the first trailer was released for the new Nicolas Cage-starring drama Pig, the general expectation was that it was going to be a ridiculous, John Wick-esque action thriller in which Cage wastes fools left and right in pursuit of his stolen truffle pig.
Few seemed to be taking it seriously at all, and given that Pig was also the filmmaking debut of its writer-director Michael Sarnoski, it wouldn't have been a surprise if the end result was a total mess.
But lo and behold, Pig was not only enthusiastically praised by critics but turned out to be one of the year's best-reviewed films, rocking a near-unbelievable 97%.
Cage received his best reviews in years for the film while Sarnoski's graceful, philosophical work behind-the-camera was also widely lauded, ensuring a film about Nic Cage trying to find his kidnapped truffle pig was more fondly received than most of next year's probable Best Picture Oscar nominees.
While it's looking like the early Oscar buzz for the film isn't going to pan out, hopefully Cage and Sarnoski might fare better at the Independent Spirit Awards. They sure as hell deserve all the praise they're getting.
