The slasher film is built upon the bloodied corpses of hundreds of victims over decades of cinema. Out of all of these deaths spanning dozens of franchises, not one of them had the same effect on us than the death of Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) in Scream 2.

Two years after the events of Wes Craven's first satirical slasher, Scream 2 once again follows Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her friends become targeted by another prank-calling killer. Merging horror, comedy, and the 'whodunnit' formula, the sequel sees our heroes race to unmask the killer before they get them first.

To our shock, one of the characters to go was lovable cinephile Randy. A central player who used his cinema knowledge to explain the rules and make us laugh in the process, we all thought he was safe. But in one suspenseful scene where he, Gale (Courtney Cox), and Dewey (David Arquette) attempt to catch their mysterious killer while he's on the phone to them, the killer unexpectedly grabs Randy from behind, pulling him into a van where he's unceremoniously offed.

If there was ever a horror character who didn't deserve to die, it was Randy Meeks.
