10 Saddest Deaths In Star Wars
7. Darth Maul
Despite his apparent death in The Phantom Menace, George Lucas and Dave Filoni decided to resurrect Darth Maul for Star Wars: The Clone Wars, which is by far the greatest decision Lucasfilm have made regarding the character. The show saw Maul on a quest for vengeance against Obi-Wan, though many feared this storyline would be left uncompleted when Disney cancelled The Clone Wars.
Whilst being child-friendly in tone, that didn't mean Star Wars: Rebels couldn't create impactful moments, particularly with legacy characters. Potentially, one of the most hard-hitting scenes the show has to offer is Darth Maul's death. After years of searching for his old nemesis, Maul finally finds Kenobi hiding on Tatooine, with Maul eventually concluding that Kenobi is protecting someone on the planet, namely, Luke Skywalker. Maul and Kenobi have an extremely brief duel, with the Zabrak being mortally wounded by the Jedi.
Even though Maul is a villain, his death is still upsetting. Maul's last thoughts are that the Chosen One (who he perceives to be Luke) will avenge him, by killing his old master, Palpatine, who was responsible for his life of pain and torment. Maul's end shows that even in death, the Zabrak still can't see beyond revenge, with the audience and Kenobi taking pity on him for how misguided and unfortunate his life has been.
