10 Saddest Horror Movie Moments
7. Lucie's Suicide - Martyrs
Martyrs is overall a very happy, joyous and fun film. Nah just kidding it’s a gory, stomach-churning French extremity film with plenty of moments that could be put on this list. The ending is pretty hard going, but for me, Lucie taking her own life is the cherry atop this unpleasant sundae.
The audience has had to piece together elements of Lucie’s past, and endure that home invasion scene through gritted teeth. Yet it all comes to a head when Lucie’s torment becomes too much – the vision of the girl she left behind overwhelms her, and through the eyes of her companion Anna we see that Lucie’s psyche has completely shattered. She can’t take what happened to her any more, and more to the point she doesn’t want to.
Seeing someone subjected to absolute evil is painful enough, and then for their demons to get them in the end is too much to bear. And oh god, is it grim. I won’t go into too many details because it is genuinely very distressing – yet its gore is overshadowed by the tragedy of it all. Lucie arguably never could have survived what happened to her, and it seemed like it was only a matter of time before she broke.
