10 Saddest Horror Movie Moments

6. Cheryl's Interview - The Poughkeepsie Tapes

Martyrs 2008
MGM

This film has recently had a surge of interest after fading into obscurity when it released. However now it's back on the scene we all get to be subjected to its horrors, lucky us. And whilst this film is schlocky and obvious in its attempts to shock and disturb, there is one character who deserves and earns our sympathy.

Throughout the film, we follow and learn of Cheryl, one of the mysterious serial killer’s victims who we presumed to have been murdered. We see her funeral at the start of the movie, and it’s a film about a serial killer, so it makes sense, right?

Well, Cheryl's fate was far worse than death. Cheryl, after gratuitous torture that we must sit through, is found to be alive. But she is far from well, with injuries that even the doctor who treated her cannot describe what happened.

Due to the horrific torture, she now cannot physically cope without pain, and as we find out, she can’t cope without her kidnapper either. When she is interviewed, she cannot answer any of their questions, but not out of fear. She says she doesn’t know what to say, because she developed severe Stockholm Syndrome and cannot function without his control.

And then she rubs the side of her head – her hand missing. Was it done to her by the kidnapper or did she do it herself? Her later suicide is the final nail in the coffin for a gut-wrenching and harrowing scene.
