10 Saddest Horror Movie Moments
3. Holly's Memory - Watership Down
I’m not going to argue about this one: Watership Down is a horror movie. Gore, hallucinations and a psychotic villain hunting down our gang of heroes? That’s a horror movie down to a T! I don’t give a s**t that they’re animated bunnies – if anything that makes it worse! So yes, this is a horror film.
There are many horrible moments that litter this film, with excessive gore that really, really shouldn’t be in a kid's movie, but the one that stands out the most is Holly’s description of how the warren was destroyed.
It’s a bad trip turned up to eleven, with psychedelic visuals and an unnerving score with a dizzying feel to the whole thing. Of course, it’s heart-breaking to watch innocent little bunny rabbits suffocate and rot in a pile of their own bodies, but there’s something far darker going on.
The reason for their suffering is humans. Human beings destroyed their homes and trapped them in the dark to die. The audience realises we are the ones to blame, and it is with great sadness and regret do we realise what we’ve done to our planet. I genuinely have no idea how this even got considered as a film safe for children.
