10 Saddest Horror Movie Moments

4. Trapped In The Cave - The Descent

Martyrs 2008
Lionsgate

Easily one of the best British horror films of the century, The Descent begins with tragedy and comes full circle when it ends in the same way. After Sarah loses her husband and daughter in a devastating accident, she is left hollow and traumatised by the ordeal. What better way to resolve that horrific experience than to go caving in a previously unexplored underground tunnel system stuffed with flesh eating beasties?

Not only is it tragic to watch all the group get picked off one by one, but also learning of Juno’s betrayal makes the film scary and pretty miserable. Confined in dark spaces with no way of getting out as your friend die around you isn’t exactly a fun weekend away.

And then there’s the ending – or the UK release one anyway. Sarah escapes the nightmare and runs out into the fresh air, or does she? With a jolt, she awakens from this illusion and we discover she’s still trapped in the darkness.

Surrounded by the Crawlers and imagining her dead daughter in front of her, Sarah’s story ends on the grimmest note possible. I’m going to say it ended there as the Descent 2 is something I utterly refuse to acknowledge.
