10 Saddest Horror Movie Moments

6. Helen Finds Trevor Cheating On Her - Candyman

The Orphanage Tomas
TriStar Pictures

The original Candyman is not a traditional horror movie - instead interlacing its moments of horror and gore with an almost dreamlike, surrealist atmosphere. This, naturally, makes its multiple moments of stark, frank realism feel like slaps to the face. This is a film that features a scene of our heroine learning about Candyman while the shadows cloud over her face like she's the love interest in a 40s noir film, followed close behind by a bleak depiction of urban life in late-80s, and early-90s Chicago.

The strongest moment of the film's surrealism being dragged crashing down into bleak reality is when Helen manages to escape the psychiatric facility and get back home. Once there, she finds one of her husband's students repainting the apartment, Trevor having moved on remarkably quickly.

Helen has lost her best friend, and has spent the entire film being gaslit by Candyman and the asylum, so this is the final straw. And while at first, she's (justifiably) enraged at Trevor and Stacy, the rage doesn't last long. Helen breaks down, realizing that she truly is all alone now, and that her escaping the asylum has only made everything worse.

A brief but devastating scene in this horror classic.
