10 Saddest Horror Movie Moments

5. Gage's Death - Pet Sematary

The Orphanage Tomas
Paramount Pictures

The original Pet Sematary, one of the better-remembered adaptations of Stephen King's work, has a way of sticking in your mind after you watch it. This is due in large part to Mary Lambert's brilliant directing, the haunting score, and of course, one of the most intense and heartbreaking deaths in the history of cinema.

When the Creed family move into their new home in Ludlow, Maine, the film almost immediately establishes the biggest problem with the property: that being the unceasingly busy highway literal inches from the front door. Fortunately, friendly neighbor Jud is there to keep baby Gage from getting himself killed. I'm certain that won't ever happen again.

Yeah, you all know what happens next.

The reason everyone remembers the scene where Gage is run over is because it's a genuinely tense sequence, as the family realizes all too late what Gage is doing and rushes to stop him as he innocently wanders into the road again - just in time for an 18-wheeler to come along and help the film earn its R-rating.

Like with Mad Max, you don't see the truck actually hit Gage, but you do get to see Dale Midkiff let out the most gutteral and horrified scream of his career, followed by photos of the short but sweet time Gage spent on this Earth.

Playing the scene for suspense was a master stroke by Lambert, because a part of you hopes against hope that they'll manage to save him. Making the moment of Gage's death hit you all the harder.
