10 Saddest Horror Movie Moments

4. Frank's Death - 28 Days Later

The Orphanage Tomas
Fox

One of the best zombie films out there, 28 Days Later remains a landmark of the genre for its modern British updating of that classic Romero formula, which naturally means a universal vibe of abject misery and decay. And it's all brilliantly summed up in one character's truly unlucky end.

Frank, played by Brendan Gleason, was just a normal father trying to keep his daughter alive after a rage-zombie virus sends all of London to hell in a handbasket. When Jim and Selena convince him and Hannah to come along with them to find someplace safer, we really get to know him through his interactions with his daughter and these two random weirdos he travels across the British countryside with.

And then a drop of zombie blood lands in his eyeball, effectively dooming him.

It's a genuinely uncomfortable, harrowing scene, even before he turns. He knows he's a dead man, so he keeps his distance from his daughter, even as he's telling her he loves her - trying to hide his condition as long as he can.

Unfortunately, it doesn't take Jim and Selena long to realize what's going on, and they have to put their friend down before he hurts anyone - right in front of his daughter.
