The videotape in The Ring series was created by Samara Morgan, who imprinted images on it from her life in a random presentation to tell people about the abuse she endured and her eventual murder when her mother pushed her down a well and shut her in to die after trying to escape for seven days. The tape ends with the image of the 'ring' that Samara saw as her mother dragged a stone over the top of the well, sealing her in.

The unlabelled, cursed tape rewards any viewer with a phone call that tells them they will die in seven days, unless, as the protagonist Rachel discovers, you make a copy and show it to someone else. In this way, Samara's ensured that her story was spread as widely as possible in a viral way.

In the seven days following watching the tape, the viewer is haunted by images of Samara, and especially her black hair, appearing repeatedly. The horror of the tape really kicks in when, on the seventh day, the image of the well appears on the screen and Samara walks towards the viewer before crawling out of the television and killing them in an unknown horrific manner - leaving her latest victim with a hideous, terrified scream imprinted on their face.
