1. The Beastly Bear - The Fox And The Hound (1981)
Damn Disney, you scary! Without a doubt the scariest Disney moment is this climactic scene where a gigantic black bear comes out of the woods with the intent to kill and devour any and all that stand in its path. Its eyes are fire red, it has huge sharp teeth and claws, it roars like a dinosaur, and it stands upwards of fifteen feet tall at the shoulder. Bullets can't pierce its hide and steel bear traps can't break its legs, so when Copper (the hound) tries to fight it off, you know he stands no chance whatsoever. It's bad enough that the bear is trying to kill both of the titular characters, but the fact that Copper had just been fighting with Todd (the fox) only minutes prior to this, after years of close friendship, the scene becomes even more stressful. The colossal bear shows up out of nowhere at the end for only a few minutes, but the sequence is nightmarish enough to make any camping experiences in the near future filled with sleepless nights and constant dread. Just look at that picture; would you ever expect something so traumatic in a film where the main characters look like that for the majority of the film? Its a safe assumption that many kids buried their heads in the couch cushions when this monster popped up for the first time. With a wide range of films featuring freaky moments, your personal scariest Disney moment might have been left out (The pink elephant hallucination sequence in Dumbo is often cited as a childhood trauma).
