1. Dracula Has No Reflection - Dracula (1931)

But we saved the deepest of all cuts for last by going back almost an entire century for one of the most intelligently and slyly creepy uses of a mirror in the genre's rich history.

We're talking of course about Tod Browning's 1931 Dracula, and specifically the iconic scene where John Harker (David Manners) opens his cigarette box, whereby the mirrored lid reveals that Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi) doesn't have a reflection.

This is of particular concern to Professor Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan), who attempts to confront Dracula about it, only for the Count to smash the cigarette box and insist he has an intense dislike of mirrors. Quite.

Sometimes the simplest flourishes are the best ones, and though this might seem completely basic by contemporary standards, it does a fantastic job of illustrating Dracula's otherworldliness in practical, efficient, and downright eerie terms.

Almost 100 years on, the scene's lost none of its ominous power.
