7. Carrie Shatters Her Mirror - Carrie
Not all unsettling mirror scenes need to go the explicitly gory route, though, as proven so expertly by Brian De Palma in his 1976 genre classic Carrie.
In an early scene, Carrie (Sissy Spacek) is abused by her religious zealot of a mother Margaret (Piper Laurie), before heading upstairs to her bedroom.
At this point, an emotionally wrecked Carrie stares at her bedroom mirror, her burgeoning telekinetic powers briefly manifesting and allowing her to explode the mirror into shards of glass in her rage - and then put it back together off-screen.
It's a potent and shockingly unexpected moment, and one elevated by both the extremely Psycho-esque screeching musical score and lingering image of Jesus Christ himself reflected in the mirror's remnants.
