10 Scariest Horror Movie Scenes From The '80s

8. Giving Birth - The Fly

Evil Dead
20th Century Fox

David Cronenberg's The Fly is not for the weak stomached. The story of eccentric scientist Seth Brundle, who's failed teleportation experiment leads him to transform into a fly, is both disgusting and engrossing.

Many moments in The Fly could have taken this spot, from Seth's realization of his fate to the many instances of his body falling apart, it is filled with hair-raising scenes. However, the dream sequence in which Ronnie visualizes giving birth to a maggot takes this spot. The horror here comes from the way in which Cronenberg twists the hopeful and innocent image of giving birth into something disgusting.

The sequence begins innocuously, with Ronnie seemingly going through the normal (albeit painful) motions of being in labour. Things change, however, as she begins to realize that what she is giving birth to isn't human.

We see the look of horror in each doctor's face as they too realize something is horribly wrong, before the camera cuts and we get to see it ourselves. The grotesque creature is not only disgusting to look at, but also works well thematically, as it is exactly what Ronnie fears - it is a perfect perversion of child birth.

It may be a dream sequence, but it is truly spine-chilling.
