10 Scariest Horror Movies Set In Motels

8. Vacancy

In Vacancy, David and Amy are forced to stay in a run-down motel after their car breaks down. As they arrive in their room, they put on a video to pass the time but turn it off due to the excessive gore on the tape. When they watch the other tapes, they realise all of them contain grisly footage of people being murdered.

But on closer inspection, the couple notice a far more disturbing detail - all of the videos were filmed in their room! Upon further investigation, the couple discover the motel owner films his clients being murdered so he can sell the footage on the black market. Not wanting to star in the latest snuff movie, David and Amy immediately make plans to escape.

Instead of letting the gore take centerstage, the story mainly focuses on the characters trying to process their nightmarish situation. Not only does this decision make the film more tense and atmospheric, it makes the violence and action more effective since it is used sparingly. The climax is a bit of a cop-out but Vacancy is definitely worth having a look.
