10 Scariest Movies Made By Disney
5. The Adventures Of Ichabod & Mr Toad (1949)
One of the more obscure entries on this, The Adventures of Ichabod & Mr Toad is comprised of two different short story adaptations – The Wind in the Willows and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. The latter is a classic Halloween tale, one which Disney knew how to translate its haunting narrative into animation.
When Ichabod Crane attends the van Tassel Halloween party to impress the wealthy Katrina, he ends up being spooked by a re-telling of the tale of the headless horseman.
The legend in question apparently lost his head to a cannonball and returns each year in search of a replacement. Just being left to the imagination, it is a terrifying story for the audience to envision. But it’s even worse for Ichabod who must venture out alone to make his way home.
As a paranoid Ichabod travels on his horse through the woods, the fear of the headless horseman increases. The suspense is momentarily broken when the sound of a galloping horse comes towards them, but it turns out to be cattails bumping on a log. The two of them laugh it off which is why they’re both completely caught off guard by the real headless horseman and his blood-curdling cackle.
It becomes a thrilling chase as Mr Crane must escape for his life. The moment which absolutely sends us white-knuckled is when the headless horseman throws flaming pumpkins at Ichabod, to which he is presumed killed. It is one of very few Disney movies where the villain succeeds.
Disney’s adaptation of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow may not be that well-known but it's an excellent viewing for Halloween as it takes a classic short horror story and transforms it into a beautifully animated film.
