5. Nosferatu

The Taking of Deborah Logan
F.W. Murnau

It cannot be understated just how much modern horror owes to F.W. Murnau's 1922 German expressionist silent movie masterpiece Nosferatu.

An unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker's "Dracula," Nosferatu has endured for almost 100 years thanks primarily to Murnau's gorgeous visual filmmaking and an indelible performance from Max Schreck as vampire Count Orlok.

Even for those who might find its age offputting, Nosferatu is an uncommonly chilling and atmospheric horror, evoking a wholly otherworldly vibe as it plumbs deep into the human subconscious.

There may be no spoken words nor anything in the way of gore, but that does nothing to diminish Nosferatu's well-earned rep as the crowned king of the vampire movie - and a fantastically frightening film to this very day.
