6. Lake Mungo
If you haven't seen Lake Mungo yet, the best thing you can do is just go watch it without reading anything else.
Released in 2008 to little attention, this Australian mockumentary has nevertheless picked up considerable esteem among horror buffs for its ingeniously believable faux-doc style, and director Joel Anderson's expert building of gut-wrenching suspense.
Lake Mungo follows a family attempting to come to terms with the drowning death of their daughter, Alice (Talia Zucker), who appears to now be haunting the family home.
Despite its supernatural storytelling, the film is presented in such an otherwise grounded fashion, with incredible performances and spot-on mimicry of documentary film tropes, that it's easy to buy into the scenario as real enough.
Low-resolution video only makes the ghostly images that much more unsettling, especially a climactic scare that remains one of the genre's most brilliantly executed of the last 20 years. Seriously.
Sadly Lake Mungo remains Anderson's only feature film to date, yet stands as a singular testament to his skill at leaving audiences in a state of high anxiety.
