10 Scariest Sci-Fi Movie Endings Ever

7. Event Horizon

The 1997 horror film, Event Horizon, is about a giant spaceship that becomes sentient after passing a gateway to Hell. (I hate it when that happens.) When a premise like that, it's no surprise Paul WS Anderon's film has a gargantuan amount of creepy imagery. It contains shots of vivisection, eye-gouging, gangrenous limbs, and people being turned inside out.

However, the most unsettling moment is the ending, which ironically contains no gore. As the Event Horizon prepares to return to hell, where its crew will be tortured forever, their captain splits the ship in two, allowing his colleagues to be blown to safety. Although the captain couldn't stop himself from being sucked into the portal, he's satisfied he stopped his crew from being cast into the hellish dimension.

But in the final scene, we discover that the Event Horizon section that the crew are residing on is still alive. In the final shot, we see the chamber doors close by themselves, sealing the crew members inside forever. What makes this conclusion all the more depressing is that it proves the captain sacrificed himself for absolutely nothing.
