The majority of scary sci-fi films revolve around extra-terrestrials, cyborgs, monsters, or interdimensional entities. But do you know what's scarier than any of that?

Humanity. Or, if you want to be more specific, bureaucracy. Case in point, let's look at Terry Gilliam's Brazil. As a low-ranking government employee called Sam grows increasingly fed up by his job (and dystopian life in general), he vows to bring it down from the inside.

Sadly, Sam's superiors discover this plot and have him arrested. As they are about to torture him, a resistance fighter breaks in, shoots the government officials, and rescues Sam. He reunites with his lover and rides with her into the sunset.

Unfortunately, it turns out that this happy ending isn't real. As Sam was about to be tortured, his mind snapped, rendering him permanently insane. Labelling him as a lost cause, the government officials walk away while Sam dopily sings to himself.

This conclusion is heartbreaking because we absolutely believed Sam achieved the impossible and toppled his corrupt government. Just as the viewer feels inspired by Sam's actions, that 'Happily Ever After' is ripped away and we learn Sam's mind was broken by the same system he tried so desperately to destroy.
