In Jack Finney's sci-fi novel, The Body Snatchers, Earth is invaded by aliens called Pod People who can take on human form. The story concludes with the Pods leaving our planet after they become convinced humanity is too resistant to be assimilated effectively.

However, the 1978 film adaptation did away with the feel-good climax and instead, devised one of the most terrifying climaxes ever. When Donald Sutherland's character, Matthew Bennell, learns the aliens are preparing to take over the world, he pretends to be one of the Pod People to avoid detection. After he destroys a stack of pod plants that were meant to assimilate humans, Bennell believes he has foiled the Pods' evil plan.

In the final scene, we see Bennell leaving work, seemingly satisfied that he stopped the invasion. But as his friend, Nancy walks up to him, Bennell suddenly points at her and emits an inhumane shriek, confirming that he is now one of the Pod People.

As scary as Bennell's shriek is, Nancy's cry is even worse. She screams hysterically, not just because her friend has been assimilated but because she realises that all of humanity will eventually suffer the same fate.
