10 Scariest Technology Horror Movies

1. Hardware

VIdeodrome Movie
Palace Pictures

This directorial debut from the eccentric filmmaker Richard Stanley appeals to all of his work's tropes in that it's visually grotesque, filled with splatter content and inventive practical effects. The techno-thriller is easily the least relatable entry on this list, but it's a horrifying experience full of technological frights.

The movie takes place in a post-apocalyptic slum and follows a cyborg head that reactivates and rebuilds itself. Whilst working to bring its mechanical body up to scratch, it goes on a violent and ferocious rampage, taking out plenty of humans and revelling in barbarism.

Hardware is a cult classic, as the dark and surreal imagery was significantly ahead of its time. Although the film was criticised upon its release for feeling derivative of movies like Alien and Terminator, it set out its own legacy thanks to the incredibly harsh visual style.

Nothing feels remotely comfortable in this film, as the lighting and cinematography make the setting seem skewed, and the villainous machine's merciless slaughter almost seems like the norm in this world. We can only hope that this isn't a reality that technology takes us to.
